Let me tell you a little about me, the founder of Massage Unlimited. I am a registered nurse that specializes in the care of premature infants and acutely ill term newborns. The families that I have had the opportunity to work with have taught me so much about what perseverance and prayer can accomplish. NICU graduates may have challenges ahead of them, but those families are always supportive of their new addition. The outlook that these families have isn't always so uplifting. After the weeks and months in the NICU, these families have had the most amazing roller coaster ride of emotions imaginable. The ups and downs of dealing with the life-threatening infections, ventilators, and learning to eat with a bottle. These new parents are dealing with the unexpected and are overwhelmed with decisions that they were not prepared to make.
After nursing school I was fulfilling my dream of making a difference in the lives of people in need. Some days are more fulfilling than others, but it seemed like there was only so much I could do. I started experiencing headaches and the aches and pains that come with being a nurse and standing for 12 hours. My hips and knees hurt and let's not even talk about my heels. I felt like I had been beat after I would finish a shift. My exhaustion began to spill over into my attitude that I would take to work. I was no longer the encouraging and patient nurse that I wanted to be. I began to see the other nurses around me experience the same struggle and some weren't even aware as to why they were changing. I found that when the needs of the caregivers were met then their outlook changed and patient care was improved. The ideal of "making a difference" that many of us followed into the profession, was again something that we felt a part of. Touching the lives of others by being their support at a time of great need. I found that my role in this hospital was to help care for those that are always caring for others. Who takes care of them? It's time that someone addressed the needs of the nurses, therapists, lab techs, radiology techs, and all other supportive personnel. It's time for someone to give back to them. My goal for this year is to provide chair massage to the hospital staff of a local hospital.
